KATHIE CAPCARA
Encaustics
Medium
Encaustic painting medium is beeswax and damar resin, with color pigments added. It is an ancient painting technique – panels and techniques date from the 1st century AD.
Method
Melted wax is applied to a heated hard surface, often wood. This is bonded with more heat, as is each successive layer. Multiple layers can be added, and when cooled, the surface can be scraped, scratched and texturized with metal tools. It is a bit like painting and sculpting at the same time.
Working in hot wax is challenging, active and fun, and allows for all kinds of 2-D and 3-D possibilities.
Bio
I currently live in Brattleboro, but have raised children and animals in Southern Vermont for 15 years. I love the beauty and quiet of our state.
I’ve been lucky to have studied art in schools with other artists, but to me, the magic in art is in the process of doing it – participating in a creative response to life and the world around us.
We all share creativity in its very many forms, and I appreciate and celebrate that!
